During July 2018, Umeå School of Architecture arranged summer
workshops in Barcelona, London, Palermo, Træna and Umeå. The
workshops were part of courses on both bachelor and master level
and involved architecture students from Sweden and abroad.
The workshop focused on this year's Tate Exchange theme of
'Production'. The students participated in a two-week summer school
at the Tate Modern and sites across London - engaging in productive
and performative pedagogies around Civic City Making, whilst
testing new knowledge via a live build project at R-Urban in
Poplar, East London.
The School brought together students across all ages and
disciplinary backgrounds, and offered spaces in the program for
citizens in London as well as students from Umeå School of
Architecture and Central Saint Martins in London. The aim was to
share and produce knowledge around civic actions, access to land,
ecology and future city visions, using the public platform of the
Tate Modern as a space to engage with a wider audience (a few
thousand visitors). The School of Civic Action also produced a
series of live-build elements designed and made in collaboration
with key local stakeholders.
